Description
Prescription Required: No
Generics: Dimenhydrinate
Used For: Vomiting relief
How it Works: Dimenhydrinate’s exact mechanism is not fully understood, but it is believed to work through central anticholinergic effects, possibly influencing the medullary chemoreceptor trigger zone or inhibiting vestibular stimulation, affecting the otolith system and, at higher doses, the semicircular canals.
Usage and Safety:
Dosage: Dimenhydrinate
Side Effects: Potential side effects include headache, dry mouth, difficulty urinating, drowsiness, reduced alertness, somnolence (particularly at the start of treatment), vertigo, myasthenia, increased intraocular pressure, balance issues, memory or concentration problems (especially in the elderly), confusion, hallucinations, difficulty sleeping, involuntary muscle movements, and difficulty moving.
Drug Interactions: May interact with CNS depressants (e.g., tranquillizers, hypnotics, anxiolytics), monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), anticholinergic drugs (e.g., atropine, tricyclic antidepressants), and CYP2D6 inhibitors (e.g., metoprolol, venlafaxine).
Indication: Used for the prevention and relief of nausea, vomiting, and/or vertigo.
When Not to Use: Avoid if you are hypersensitive to dimenhydrinate, diphenhydramine, 8-chlorotheophylline, or any other ingredient in the formulation. Also, avoid use during or within two weeks following MAOI therapy, if you have narrow-angle glaucoma, or if you have chronic lung disease.
Precautions:
Precaution: Use with caution in individuals with myasthenia gravis, epilepsy, prostatic hypertrophy, urinary retention, narrow-angle glaucoma, asthma, bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), moderate to severe hepatic impairment, or moderate to severe renal impairment.
Warnings:
Warning 1: Tolerance may develop with continuous use. Consult a healthcare provider if insomnia persists, as it may indicate a serious underlying condition.
Warning 2: Avoid using other antihistamine-containing products, including topical antihistamines and cough and cold medicines.
Warning 3: Use with caution in the elderly due to a higher likelihood of side effects.
